In the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s the United States Government/Military perpetuated the notion that anyone that saw an unidentified flying object moving about the skies may be mentally unbalanced and if you mentioned it publicly, then you were ostracized by the community. This was a particularly cruel thing to do to innocent people who simply witnessed something unexplained.
