In 1965 Gemini 7 was in the second orbit of their 14 day flight. Astronauts Frank Borman and James Lavelle were exiting the dark side of the moon when they spotted a UFO. In those days NASA preferred astronauts use the term ‘Santa Claus”, when conveying UFO sightings, with Lovell stating “Please be advised that there is a ‘Santa Claus’. Initially NASA control believe the astronauts were witnessing their own booster rocket, however, that was not to be the case here is the radio transcript of their communication with mission control:
Gemini 7: Bogey at 10 o’clock high.
Control: This is Houston, say again.
Gemini 7: Said we have a bogey at 10 o’clock high.
Control: Gemini 7, is that the booster or an actual sighting?
Gemini 7: We have an actual sighting.
Control: Estimated size or distance?
