Hynek UFO Classification System

Alan J Hynek became involved with UFOs initially as a skeptic as chair of Northwestern University’s Astronomy Department. He was tasked by the US Air Force in 1948 to work with ‘Project Sign’ to evaluate UFO witness reports. He was even mocked as the creator of the ‘Swamp Gas’ theory, which is it’s own story. Over time Mr. Hynek realized that all of these witness reports could not be debunked and that people were experiencing exactly what they had claimed. This revelation caused Hynek to reverse course and become a believer and UFOs. In the 1950s the good doctor created a classification system for UFO encounters, and it goes like this:

Nocturnal Light

Any anomalous lights seen in the sky whose description rules out the possibilities of aircraft lights, stars, meteors, and other natural or man made phenomena.

Daylight Disk UFOs

This specifically refers to a daylight UFO and can include other shapes as well including cigars, triangles, orbs, etc.

Radar Visuals

This specifically refers to when radar verification can be confirmed at the same time a witness sighting occurs. This also includes radar sightings without visual witnesses.

Close Encounters of the First Kind

A UFO witnessed within 500 feet or less. * UAP.News believes this distance should be increased, and the definition expanded to include Unusual Flight Characteristics such as; instantaneous stopping and starting, vertical acceleration, etc.

Close Encounters of the Second Kind

The UFO that leaves physical evidence such as markings on the ground or burned vegetation including radiation burns to exposed witnesses. Radio interference and electronic malfunctioning may also be symptomatic of this level of encounter.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Actually witnessing EBEs or Extraterrestrial Biological Entities either inside or outside of a craft.

Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind

These include alien experiences such as abductions.

Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind

The final stage when bidirectional communication occurs between humans and EBEs or Extraterrestrial Biological Entities.
