For some people witnessing a UFO can be a scary experience, however when you are piloting a plane and encounter a UFO the fear is increased. This event happened on October 21st in 1978. 20 year old pilot Frederick Valentich was flying a Cessna 182L light aircraft in which he had roughly 150 hours of flying time. This trip was a 125 mile journey between Moorabin and King Island across the Bass Strait. At 7:06pm the young pilot radioed Melbourne Flight Service the report and unidentified craft following him at 4,500 feet. The service explained there were no craft visible to them near him. The pilot claimed to witness a large craft with four bright landing lights illuminated and that it passed a thousand feet above them at very high speed. Short time laterValentich claimed the craft was moving towards him. A short time later the pilot reported having engine trouble, which is not uncommon when planes encounter UFOs. The last words of Frederick Valentich were “It isn’t an aircraft”. The Australian Department of Transport investigated the disappearance but found no evidence of a crash.
